On the night of our wedding, August 1st, we stayed at Hampton Inn in Anderson, SC. We didn't want to drive down to Savannah, GA in the dark and have to check in to our cottage after hours, so we decided to not leave until Sunday morning. I would highly suggest this plan to all brides because you will be so tired after your reception.
Sunday, August 2, 2015 We made it to Savannah around 2pm. We traveled back roads to get there and the ride was easy. Since we couldn't check in to our cottage until 4pm we decided to eat downtown before driving to the island. Lunch was on the river at Cotton Exchange Tavern, a quaint pub stuck between tourist traps which immediately struck our fancy. We ate burgers and onion rings as the skies opened and the rain pounded down the cobblestone streets. After lunch we had no choice but to slip off our shoes and make a run for it across town back to the parking garage. After a quick ride to Tybee we stopped at Tim's Beach Gear to reserve our bicycles for the week before making our way to Tybee Vacation Rentals to pick up our keys. We loved the cottage we booked through this company, but another great rental agency is Mermaid Cottages, also located on the island. We dropped off our bags at our tiny Sea Biscuit Cottage, and after ohh-ing and ahh-ing at how precious the house was we drove two blocks to AJ's Dockside Restaurant located on the back water. The food was great and we caught a beautiful sunset while we were there!
Monday, August 3, 2015 We woke up early to go to the Farmers Market on the island. We sampled some delicious baked goods and bought doggie biscuits for Simon. We also picked out fresh tomatoes for sandwiches. By midmorning the rains were coming in so we climbed the lighthouse and toured the surrounding cottages. Next, we walked through the museum and ate lunch in the dunes at North Beach Bar and Grill. This restaurant was featured on the Food Network and highly praised by bloggers. We enjoyed our burgers while watching the storm out over the ocean. After lunch we walked through Fort Pulaski which is further inland. The sun finally peaked back out around 3pm so we shopped around the Shops at Tybee Oaks to look for souvenirs. After dinner we rode our bikes to the beach and enjoyed ice cream at Seaweed's.
Tuesday, August 4, 2015 We slept in until 10am and it was wonderful. Soon after we loaded down our bikes and rode to the beach. We brought our own chairs, but used an umbrella and wagon that belongs to the owners of the cottage. We packed beers and sandwiches and didn't come off the sand until almost 3pm. We loafed around Savannah for the rest of the afternoon and checked out some great shops. I particularly loved One Fish Two Fish, Le Paperie, The Paris Market, and the Savannah Bee Co. Also, a few of my favorites; Anthropologie, Free People, and Lilly Pulitzer. We ate dinner at a local dive called Congress St Social Club where I created my own macaroni and it was a dream come true. The night ended with a sunset walk to the pier and ice cream at Seaside Sweets.
Wednesday, August 5, 2015 While Connor made phone calls to the utility companies for our new house I rode to the beach to take pictures. After leftovers for lunch we laid out in the afternoon sun and planned our evening in Savannah. After a couple stops at Two Women & a Warehouse and Clutter... we enjoyed a late dinner at The Olde Pink House. The entire menu sounded amazing, but we narrowed it down to fried chicken and filet mignon. We shared sides of macaroni and cheese, twice baked potato, and asparagus. I loved the Pink Lady cocktail, and the Connor is still drooling over the key lime pie. When we told the waiter we were celebrating our marriage they gave us a platter of chocolate covered strawberries for free!
Thursday, August 5, 2015 We visited the Tybee Island Marine Center in the morning and enjoyed seeing all the native marine species and the touch pool. We rode our bikes so we could stay for lunch at Fannies by the pavilion. We sat on the beach for about an hour before a massive thunderstorm hit and we had to ride home in the downpour. That was an adventure. While is rained I prepared baked spaghetti for supper and we caught up on our favorite home improvement shows. After we ate we rode over to Seaweed's for snow cones.
Friday, August 6, 2015 We woke up to the sound of more rain on the tin roof. After checking the forecast, we decided to go to Savannah to catch an early movie. We saw the newly released Trainwreck and when we emerged the sun was shining! We spent the rest of the afternoon reading on the beach before heading back in to the city for the Dog Days of Summer festival on River St. There were tons of venders and food carts and puppies to pet before dinner at Huey's. Our table by the window looked out over the bay so we were able to "people watch." For dessert we had macarons from Marche de Macarons which were delicious.
Saturday, August 7, 2015 Our last full day was spent by the ocean. The there were tons of locals out so we had to fight for our patch of sand. Overall, it was a lazy day spent reminiscing over this season of engagement and wedding planning, and excited daydreaming for our new home. Our last meal was at MacElwee's which boasts being the oldest restaurant on the island.
