This was our first Halloween in our new house, so we had no idea how many kids would be coming by. We decided to get enough treats for 100 kids. Better to be safe than sorry, right? So we made our way to Target to check out their candy aisle. We decided on two mini sized chocolates and two mini sized gummy treats per kid. On the way out I wanted to stop by the dollar section at the front of the store... that's where things got crazy! They had Halloween themed erasers, spider rings, and treat bags that I thought were adorable, so we bought all of them and made 100 treat bags. These bags made it really easy to hand out since kids weren't digging around in a bowl for the piece they wanted. Including non-candy items is also a great way to include children with allergies who may not be able to eat candy.
I put out a bowl of autumn themed trail mix to snack on while we waited to everyone to arrive. In a large bowl, I mixed Chex Mix Muddy Buddies, Reese's Pieces, marshmallows, and pretzel sticks. You could also add candy corn or pumpkins! This recipe makes for a quick and easy snack, and could be tailored to any holiday. For dinner, I made balsamic chicken with matchstick carrots, asparagus, and cherry tomatoes. We paired it with salad and dinner rolls and had hot chocolate cookies for dessert. What a fun evening of food and fellowship with Connor's family!
Unfortunately, we didn't have a single trick-or-treater come by our house, but I wasn't about to let all of those treat bags go to waste! We packed up and headed to Main St Fountain Inn where we parked the truck and handed out our candy to the families who passed by. The left over bags went with my mother-in-law to her kindergarten students who enjoyed them as a post-Halloween surprise.
