April is a busy month in the Burgess house! My Mama, Daddy, and me all have birthdays this month, and it seems like every spring function is planned for one of these warm weekends. If you're looking for a quick & easy dessert to make for a shower, birthday, or picnic, this is the perfect cake! You'll need a white cake recipe and white buttercream frosting. Here is a popular recipe. Mix the batter and divide it into four bowls. Drop food coloring into each cup until you see the color you desire, and then pour them into pastry bags (ziploc bags will work, too). This is where I recruited some assistance from Connor. We each held 2 bags and began to swirl all four colors into the baking pan. All that's left is to bake as directed! Decorate with white frosting, and once the cake has cooled add rainbow sprinkles for a festive look.

If you haven't heard, The Village of West Greenville has recently been revitalized. The old downtown buildings have been given new life and local artists have set up galleries all along the strip. I was introduced to this neat community when I met with our wedding florist a few weeks ago. The Station, which is located on Pendleton Street, is home to Statice floral design. The ladies at The Station (florist + artist + 2 photographers) invited me to their "First Friday" party, which is an event The Village hosts on the first Friday of each month. On First Friday local businesses extend their hours until 9pm and have special promotions. There's usually a band that performs and local food trucks set up on the street. Connor and I went down last Friday to see what it was all about... We weren't disappointed! The most recent First Friday was on April 3, 2015. Connor and I started at The Station where we got to see Sunny debut her new collection, ate delicious tots from Thoroughfare, and visited with new friends. From there we took a quick walk down to Lily Pottery. I was really impressed by the assortment of beautiful clothes and jewelry she had on display. We walked through a handful of galleries and saw countless treasures. If you're looking for artwork or pottery to display in your home I recommend you go shopping in The Village! Our last retail stop was at Knack Studios & it quickly became my new favorite shop. They have planters and towels and furniture and greeting cards and coffee... Everything your heart desires is found in this store. Once our wallets were empty we made our way over to Naked Pasta which is a restaurant run by fellow Hillcrest alumni, Jon & Lange. The food was great & the service was better. We had popsicles from King of Pops for dessert (try the cookies & cream). I've got to say, our first experience in The Village was magical and we can't wait to go back!
My favorite time of year has finally arrived! There are three reasons why Easter is my favorite holiday... 1) Jesus. I love Jesus and any day spent celebrating Him is a great day. 2) Food. Ham, macaroni and cheese, and Peeps are just a few classic Easter foods that make me really happy. 3) Lilly Pulitzer. Bold prints in bright colors are the best. Every spring I buy a new Lilly dress to debut on Easter Sunday. We decided to get into the "spring spirit" by dying Easter eggs. It is one of my fondest childhood memories, and since our chickens are laying 6 eggs a day, we had plenty to work with. Our hens produce eggs in colors varying from a light butter to a dark mocha. I had never dyed brown eggs before, but I think they turned out gorgeous! Start by hard boiling your eggs (and try your best to not crack them.) While they cool you may set up plastic cups with a teaspoon of white vinegar, a fourth cup of boiling water, and drops of food coloring. I used a pack of neon liquid food coloring from Publix. Connor and I enjoyed mixing the colors and bickering about how long to leave the eggs in the dye. Obviously the longer they soak, the darker the color. How beautiful are those dark turquoise and plum? I was so pleased to see the speckles show through the lighter dyes.
Once they've dried you can display them in a bowl or basket. The one I used belonged to my great grandmother and made for a great centerpiece. |
